"I love metal roofs. It's one of my favourite roofing materials (I also love a flat green roof). But I like metal for a few reasons. One, it lasts. A metal roof is one of the most durable roofs you can have. It can last up to 50 years. Two, it's resistant. It resists insects, mildew, rot, UV raysnot to mention fire-resistant. And it won't crack or curl like asphalt.
If you go with asphalt, you'll need to replace your shingles at least twice. I don't care what the warranty says: An asphalt shingle will last 10-15 yearsmaximum. They start to break down as soon as they're exposed to weather. And if you don't replace them you expose your home to the elements, making it vulnerable.
If you're staying putand it sounds like you areyou want a metal roof. Is it more expensive? Yes. It can cost more than twice as much as asphalt. But it's an investment. You save money in the long run because you won't need to replace itand you protect your home. A metal roof can last 3 times longer, raise the value of your home and reduce maintenance. All pluses."
